On loan from the Wellcome Library in London, this exhibition is devoted to images of China by Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837-1921). From 1868 to 1872, Thomson made extensive trips to Guangdong, Fujian, Beijing, China’s north-east and down the Yangtze and the images on display are drawn from his time in these regions. Timed to co-ordinate with Chinese New Year celebrations in 2012, the exhibition includes over 50 stunning images with a wide variety of themes in China including people, architecture, domestic and street scenes. A selection of traditional Chinese clothing and accessories from the Library's own collections are also on display.
The Chester Beatty Library opens a window on the artistic treasures of the great cultures and religions of the world. Its rich collection of manuscripts, prints, icons, miniature paintings, early printed books and objets d'art from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe offers visitors a visual feast - all the result of the collecting activities of one man.
